Notes 02:
Covid-19 & Art
Covid 19 has not only caused great damage, but also has given us an opportunity to recognize something new. Air/Water pollution was unprecedentedly reduced and environment for wild life dramatically improved during the lockdown. This sudden change made us reconsider what the relationship between the natural environment and human activities should be.
Among countries around the world, a conflict between globalism and nationalism is intensifying over the policy against the pandemic. People are wondering which would be better able to cope with the pandemic, liberalism or totalitarianism. World-wide strained relation made us reconsider what an ideal political system should be.
The pandemic deprived us of an opportunity to meet people in person. On the other hand, online meeting and remote working became common. It realized diversified working styles, but also divided us into the winning side and the losing side. There still exists pro and con opinions against the vaccination and it causes a friction among the citizens. Widening disparity and social divisions made us reconsider what our life and society should be.
Contemporary art gives us an opportunity to reconsider the existing system and common sense of value. In this point of view, it seems to me Covid-19 might be similar to art, even though I know there were many victims of the pandemic. We may see our planet in a new light in a post-Covid-19.
